This is a reprint of the quality control guide used by inspectors at Pontiac assembly plants.  This book is a resource for authenticating original equipment on your car, restoring parts that may have gone missing (such as decals). and for adding appropriate accessories.

Specifications and options:

  • List of paint colors, convertible top colors, and wheel covers (these are lists of names.  The book is black and white and there are no color images).
  • Interior trim combinations: - trim number, color name, type of fabric per seat style (bench or bucket).  
  • Seats:  Bench or bucket seat types and head rests, which are standard or optional for each model and body style
  • Option group codes with a list of included equipment including part numbers
  • Accessories: lists of codes for accessories and whether or not they are available on each body style
  • Dimensions:  gap tolerances for sheet metal fitting
  • Specifications:  wheelbases for each body style, wheel alignment, curb rocker panel heights for each body style, idle speed, tire inflation and balancing for shipping.


Charts with part numbers and applications based on body style and options:

  • Decals: list of decals with part numbers and types, and a written description (but not illustration) of where to apply them
  • Transmission console usage chart:  which transmissions had standard or optional floor or column shifters for each model and body style
  • Transmission codes:  type of transmission, with identification codes, sales code (stamped onto Protect-O-Plate), part number, and usage
  • Front stabilizer shaft usage:  part numbers listed for each type of vehicle
  • Shock absorbers:  standard and heavy duty options listed by part number for each style
  • Springs:  part numbers used for each configuration (with options for transmission type, a/c, trailer towing, police package, heavy duty, and firm ride)
  • Rear Axle: gear ratios and combinations, both standard and optional, for each body style with options for the type of brakes, transmission, engine, trailering package, a/c, and differential type. 
  • Propeller shaft - part numbers for each option package
  • Battery:  batteries per series for standard, A/C. Hydra-Matic, Premium Fuel engines, larger alternators, and heavy duty service
  • Alternator and voltage regulator: part numbers for options such as standard, heavy duty, A/C, and larger alternators
  • Radiator:  radiator designations (option codes) for each model engine, transmission and options such as heavy duty cooling and A/C.  List of shrouds by code letters and part numbers with gives core constant & thickness, oil cooler, height , width, and area.  Part numbers for insulators and shrouds used with each radiator.
  • Speedometer gear and adapter part numbers for each combination of axle ratio and tire size.
  • Tires:  code, size, color, quantity, ply, rating, and body styles
  • Wheel covers:  code, part name, part number, quantity, and series they apply to
  • Engine: engine assembly number and codes used with types of transmissions, carburetors, compression ratios for each model and option group
