From the dust jacket:
“Between the two outer Pillars of the Qabalistic Tree of
Life, which are called Mercy and Severity, stands the Middle Pillar, which
means Equilibrium. The two pillars represent any of the pairs of opposites in
nature. Either of these opposing qualities when carried to an extreme is
unnatural; thus the primary goal in all spiritual work is to achieve a balance,
an equilibrium, between these forces, by conscious and directed effort.
The system of the Qabalah is one of the most ancient methods
for bringing about this balance of polarities within the individual, yet it is
peculiarly appropriate for students of today.
But what Dr. Regardie presents in his unusual study is not
only an exposition ot the Qabalah-it is an ingenious, workable, flexible synthesis
of Qabalistic methods with the techniques of Analytical Psychology.
Those just entering on the Path are nearly always confronted
with huge and unexpected psychic obstacles: the mind is blocked from effective
action by adolescent or infantile thought-patterns remaining unrecognized,
which may compel the ego to extremes of re-action; while every new,
"unorthodox" undertaking throws across the screen of the mind a
shadow of crippling fear. Recognizing all this to be so, the author feels that
analysis is the logical precursor of spiritual development." Analysis can
resolve these hindering fantasms and free the mind to get on with its
development in the chosen discipline. Further
by associating Magic with Analysis the production of genius-ever the goal
of Magic," will be more open to achievement.
Dr. Regardie discusses the layers of the psyche, relating
each to its place on the Qabalistic Tree and suggesting the appropriate magical
correspondences. For if the techniques of analysis are employed during the
first stage of the student's development, elementary magical work must begin in
the second. Analytical Psychology and Magic should be seen as two aspects of a
single system, its goal the integration of the human personality.
It has long been known that we must be willing to follow the
Path even to the edge of the Abyss, which is the Unconscious, in search of
"the unborn or lost potentials of the self." The Middle Pillar should
prove one of the bright lights on our way.”
